      I attended the 2018 Diocesan Convention for, basically, the Episcopal Churches of Western Washington late last month.

      Dent Davidson, is sitting at the piano in this video, was commissioned to write a song by Bishop Curry, they head of the Episcopal Church, to write a song. Everyone knows who Bishop Curry is-they guy who married Harry and Meagan Markel earlier this year.

      He used to live in Seattle, so he brought to song to the Convention to perform for the very first time. Choir singers that were there showed up and saw the song for the very first time around 10am on Saturday morning. We practiced for 2 hours and went back to the Convention. We practiced an hour later in the afternoon, then sang the song in front of the attendees around 5pm that night.

      I will say, when I first looked it over, I thought there was no way we would get it in that short of time, particularly when part of it was in Latin.

      It was fun.

      A Very Special Veteran

          I haven't been on Yabberz much as life has been busy. Today I want to share the story of my Father In Law, Joseph Martin Cannaday. He passed peacefully in hospice at the age of 91. While gathering information for his funeral I found he served in WW2. Not something he talked about much. He was on the ship the Topica in 1945. He lived a wonderful life with 3 children and a wife of 63 yrs. He was the owner of the East Coast franchise of Fred Astaire Dance Studios which he sold at the age of 85. So in honor of his military service and his life of dance, I wanted to post a song.I love you dad and pray your next journey in eternity is full of love and that as your son said "You are teaching the angels to dance. https://youtu.be/RV-Z1YwaOiw Codeman is on active duty but will be sent home for your funeral.

              The italic portion is very important to me because I have never truly felt safe or happy even after serving this country in the Armed Forces for 15 years. As a Black man in America it is very important to me that we find a way to "alter or to abolish" the current system of Government, so that it will truly represent my family and those people of color that the current system adversely affects.

              To this date, in my opinion I and people of color have not truly been "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." I am not asking for anyone to agree with me. You have the right to believe as you choose and in some cases, some of you may believe you have realized some of the things above. However, my opinion may differ from yours and that is fine.


              Please honestly ask yourself if the Government truly represents your wants and needs as a citizen.

                  Life Refracted

                      We are beings of light caught up in a corporal form. When light is refracted through a prism it's many layers are made clear. Life itself bends around time and thoughts, and when refracted, the clarity of those layers are beautiful to see and are more honest than one would care for at times. In those times of simple reflection an understanding of grace, and a realization that God has no edges.

                      In looking back, that common man, the acts and thoughts, the similarities and the differences. The rivers of individual psyche's run deep in some areas while barely breaking twain in others. I have found myself tied to that riverboat, tied along with the masses in actions that floated above the waterline, in depth analysis be damned. So when I felt strange not too long ago, I noticed that my old thoughts had shown up again. Like some bad planning at dinner for one hundred, I didn't notice the food disappearing too fast.

                      Once again I became that teenager that did not cope well with my expectations. People were irritating me to no end and my frustration was through the roof. For someone who is in the recovery community it never even occurred to me that my state of mind(s) were not normal, or even the way they were supposed to be, but very much familiar on another level. Without even knowing it, I went full alcoholickly. The symptoms of one malady was pure camouflage for the other, I was a dry drunk and getting crunchier by the day. I didn't notice the mental changes, the trauma's that happened and the turning off of that part of my grey matter. I did notice the physical parts, the heart problems, the angiogram results that didn't match up with the other pieces. The constipation and sweats were part of my chronic gut issues, I was toxic, I knew that much, I didn't realize, just how toxic I really was.

                      I crawled back into that bubble of self doubt and loathing again and lost the desire to do many of those things I truly enjoy. I stopped creating almost completely, My squirrel moments, which were usually filled with thoughts and ideas, nothing more than shutdown moments, nada...nothing going on in there. Raw and chafed by my own angst and crunchy with disappointment I thought I just needed to snap out of it, snap out of what though? Elation and complete disappointment at the same time, the TA in my class sparked the thoughts that lead to the truth. An email to an old teacher and friend, telling him of my horrible news and my Summer, was what made the hammer go boom. What a freaking idiot! Has been a mantra in my head since this became apparent. The old phrase that I like to say that when things become apparent, that means it is meant to guide you.

                      I get to look back today, I know what the alcoholic me would be doing, and I know what the whole person is doing now. Perspective, a rewriting of your history with what you know now. I am still emerging from the most dangerous of illnesses, the kind you don't know you have. Those are the ones that, like alcohol and drugs, are supposed to kill you if you don't catch them in time. I had an epiphany, no, not the instant ones with golden lights and harp music. This one was more like using an axe on the granite mountain, hoping to do something more than make your ears ring. Well it worked, a tiny piece chipped away one night, a teacher's assistant helped me out with a few good chunks the next day. As I took up my keyboard to write again, avalanche.

                      Of course, an avalanche, the kind that buries you deep in your own wreckage when it is over. Along with the elation that you have survived, a new paradigm of the amount of work needed to free yourself comes rushing in. A panic of sorts, because there is still that elation that you are not only halting the matters burying you to begin with, but in the same motion - exposing a shaft of light to energize you. I am just working my big foot free these days, in the avalanche that I am recovering from it found itself firmly ensconced in my mouth, among other places...

                      There is also that eleation that comes with the knowledge that the real, the best parts of you were disconnected from your psyche. Thus the constant strain of life becomes acute, the smallest things an irritant. Life out of focus and you are searching for you glasses, mad at the world for making you open your eyes to begin with; Couldn't I just sleep, please?... Not this time, that is old behaviors, time is now to pull on the boots that take too much cow to make, and trudge along, happily. That is what has come back to me as much as my memory, and recall, is the pure joy. The pink clouds of life. In recovery they say to enjoy it while you can, and I am being selfish and self centered with it this time around. It feels great, and I am grateful for the people that have come into my life to make it a better one.

                      When life itself is broken down into its core wavelengths, and the music is in harmony with the colors, it is grace. When those layers lose focus and the music isn't heard playing, it may be time to move the prism, remove the prisons, and begin again with life refracted.

                      An Update To An Earlier Post And A Request To Reply

                          Earlier this week I posted about a moment in our break room, that made me feel old.

                          “What do you mean whose Clark Gable?”

                          The original upset changed, I have a deep very personal fascination with the twenty odd years between the world wars. I reminded myself

                          1. You can’t be upset because other folks don’t have your intrests.

                          2. It was well before my time too!

                          Anyway, as my thinking changed so did my questions - Forget the King of Hollywood, ok fine who stays in the conversation?

                          I did what one of my dearest friends taught me to do- I made a list. Am sharing it with coworkers and asking them to give my names to their high school, college age or older children or anyone. This is a list I made in two minutes I could make ten more of the once long ago most famous people in the world. Some like Gable where Kings for decades some just a headline or two.

                          My interest is not to get people interested in the thirties or google my top thirty just to pick people they know - Babe Ruth might have heard a name or nothing. It’s just an evolution of a lunch conversation, enjoy and reply or no. It’s just struck a nerve who is remembered who no.

                          One final note. As I said this is my list and some might look and say it lacks color, that’s fair it does- Jesse Owens the Olympic track star or Billie Holiday one of the great voices of all time lots of folks deserve a high rank. But I didn’t want to edit my first choices to be fair

                          Today I Learned That A "kid" From The Neighborhood Where I Grew Up,

                          one of the big kids we all looked up to - has cancer of the liver and pancreas. In his early 60's now - he raised his family far off in the Midwest - a hard working middle class church going man. So it was on the telephone this past weekened - from the Midwest all the way out to Oregon and up to Alaska - we heard from Danny. Brushing aside the tears - mindful of the stand up guy you are - here's to you, Dan. I respect you so much.

                          We heard you speak about how much we meant to you. Know this from us - we feel the same about you. We love you too. Forever.

                          Ring Security Systems.

                              My wife ordered a Ring Security System through the internet to be picked up at a Lowes Hardware store. Since I work in Doral, a suburb of Miami, I used Google Maps to find the nearest Lowes and went there and picked it up. When I left I didn't retrace the way I had gone thinking I knew roughly where I was enough to find one of the usual lunch spots on my way back. Of course I became partially lost in the back industrial zone of the outskirts of Miami so by the time I found my way back to work, the time for lunch was already well past, therefore, no lunch - but I had acquired the system.

                              We bought this nearly $500 worth of the new security system for our home, or specifically, our sailboat and cars: 2 'Spotlight Cams' and a WiFi Extender. This is the system that allows you to remotely view who is at your door, record them and activate a light or noise and speak to the person.

                              Well, first of all, I learned that you need to download an 'app', i.e., the software you need to both set the system up and to run it / view through the camera, etc.,

                              So, I downloaded it to my laptop because I want to see the image on as large a screen as possible, most often and only on my phone when nothing else is available.

                              Well, it took over an hour to accomplish what should have been a very quick task, because it wouldn't allow me to establish my on-line account, the first step. After an hour of screwing around trying to do that, I called the Help line. They were not very useful so I came into it another way and got the app to run, but it wouldn't display the 'setup' page, which is critical to make the system work at all. So, I called the help line again and learned that the 'setup' feature won't run on a Laptop; it must run on a smartphone. Though once setup the app will run on a laptop. I shared how insane that design is to the help line person, who I am positive went right to the executive in charge of Customer Care and shared my frustration along with my design advisements.

                              So, I acquiesced and tried to download this app onto my phone.

                              Well, my Android phone has a Kaios operating system and I spent hours searching without finding that version - mostly IOS for the Iphone, the Google version for their phones, etc., but not mine.

                              So, this $500 system can't be set up because the genius who designed this thought everyone must have one of the smartphones from a specific short list of phones and unless you have that, even if you have a laptop, you don't deserve to be setup, and able to use their device.

                              That was a good part of a day, and a lost lunch, I'll never get back.

                              But, the batteries for the cameras are still charging.....
