A major new study of social-media sharing patterns shows that political polarization is more common among conservatives than liberals — and that the exaggerations and falsehoods emanating from right-wing media outlets such as Breitbart News have infected mainstream discourse.

Though the report, published by the Columbia Journalism Review, does an excellent job of laying out the challenge posed by Breitbart and its ilk, it is less than clear on how to counter it. Successfully standing up for truthful reporting in this environment “could usher in a new golden age for the Fourth Estate,” the authors write. But members of the public who care about such journalism are already flocking to news organizations like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and, locally, The Boston Globe, all of which have experienced a surge in paid subscriptions since the election of President Trump. That’s heartening, but there are no signs that it’s had any effect on the popularity or influence of the right-wing partisan media.

we suffer from a lack of critical thinking.

we suffer from the glut of resources. how often do we hear people saying that it is all too confusing, they don't know what to think, it's too much, they just cannot think about it.

and we suffer from a corrupt political system.

none of the three north american countries are a democracy. we live under capitalist regimes; the only difference is that a group of insane people have managed to grab power in the u.s.a.

psychopaths and sociopaths are insane. beyond any help.

Isn't the word polarization supposed to mean mainly greater distance between Cons and Libs, both moving away from each other? Just blaming one side for this is a kinda newish ting. Until the Libs can come up with something and someone great, they should keep quiet, lick their wounds, and come up with a new game plan.

Gaslighting and insulting any source that shows you for what you are, is a popular tactic with you right wingers.

It doesn't however change the facts, you are polarized and terrified of change.

Since the 1960 campaign between Nixon and Kennedy I have been intellectually involved in politics. Every four years after we battled for the WH, usually with a bit of decorum and gentlemanly politeness. Until 1972 that is, that to me was the turning point, Nixon instituted the 'dirty trick' gang, Ailes, Cheney, Rumsfield, etc. The spread of inaccurate propaganda by that bunch in my opinion lead directly to what we have today. One true example is the memo from Ailes to Nixon about the need of a direct channel to republican voters, guess what came along, 'Fox News', run by Roger Ailes.

                                  Young Hobbes,

The study refers to...social media sharing. Yippee...big whoop...yawn. Of course, social media lends itself completely to polarized thought...The Grand Lefty Yabberz, with its "mission," being a PERFECT example.

Now in the "real world" of the abrogation of Free Speech, demonstrations, protests, vandalism, riots, bodily injury, claiming of victimhood at every turn, and reams and reams and reams and reams of the vilest HATE SPEECH imaginable, the Dems/Libs/Lefties have the Right beat by light years!
