My first question is how many DMV offices in other counties are closing? The answer is easy to find. Alabama is systematically closing all DMV offices (they have 78) save four: Birmingham, Mobile, Montgomery, and Huntsville. These four seem to be geographically scattered throughout the state. The ones being closing now are mostly part-time rural centers which together serviced less than 5% of transactions in 2014. Are there more blacks in those rural areas? More than likely. There are also probably a lot of whites in those same areas too as the state is approximately 3/4 white. I took a quick look at the affected counties and didn't notice much of an extreme isolation of them from the surviving centers. So, while the statistics reported may be true, the interpretation of them in relation to the whole may be biased. Now, all that doesn't mean that the "conspiracy" to keep minorities from registering to vote doesn't exist - just that it's a lot more subtle than we suspect.

If you have watched Alabama history and federal legal challenges, there is certainly a pattern to it....not only of race....but based on extreme fundamentalist religious values. They have tried to outlaw alcohol sales, sex toy sales....make the Bible the primary textbook....it's just not a place most reasonable people would want to be.

I have a lot of relatives in Alabama and have not heard of any of them having any problem voting or getting a driver's license.

"Reasonable" people are not being forced to go there nor to stay there.

And I agree with the people of Alabama who say "If your heart ain't here, get your ass out!"

I visited a family member there...stayed for about a week....and personally, I was more afraid there than I ever was in Tijuana, Mexico. It's a different world than I know. I got my ass out!

Hey, Alabama is a very patriotic state. They support the Red, White and Blue. They have red blood, blue collars, and white sheets.......

We're seeing a return of the good ole days with these new voter restriction laws designed to make voting illegal for Black people in many American States (not just Southern States). Of course no one is brave enough to come right out and blatantly say this is the reason, but for people who have a general knowledge of politics and race in this country, the reason is clear. After all, voting rights for African Americans was (and still is) a new concept in Southern States.

A concept that was not welcomed with open arms fifty-years ago with the passing of the Voting Rights Act. Since then (1965) the Republican Party has been busy conjuring up ways to return the South to those good ole inglorious days of long ago. Yes what Alabama is doing now to prevent Blacks from voting for the Democratic Party is reminiscent of George Wallace standing in front of the school house door to bar Black students from entering. No surprises here.

Exactly. Since the Voting Rights Act, especially the southern states...have worked very hard to come up with discreet ways to take things back to "the good ole days." The KKK is still alive there...and if you lift the hoods, you find the judges, police officers, and government officials hiding under them. If they were a benevolent group, they wouldn't be hiding under the hoods.

I've read the responses to your comment and it just dawned on me that ignorant rednecks live in other places besides the South. Where did you come up with this garbage?

That they do, but not nearly in the numbers. I've seen some in New York....I grew up in California...and we had our share...but I've been in all 48 lower states....and the south holds the record, like it or not.

The point is....that they are denying services to the public...necessary services...and supposedly because of "state financial problems." If that's the case, it doesn't speak well for the Republicans who run the state, now does it??
