Fascism, which millions of Americans fought and hundreds of thousands died fighting against in World War II is alive and well in the USA today.
It isn't the fascism of Italy's Mussolini or Germany's Hitler (at least not yet), but it accomplishes the same ends of delivering unbridled power and obscene wealth to the few, who are loyal to and willingly enable the greed and avarice of their avatar leader, whether the enablers are in the Congress, the business world or the media.
Fascism has creeped into America since the end of WWII, slowly and stealthily eroding democracy by complicating or suppressing the voting process, chipping away at the economic gains of the middle class and demonizing the unions that made them possible, and as always; using racism and bigotry to divide and conquer the electorate by scapegoating black or brown people to convince the ignorant whites that "blacks are the enemy," and only a strong "law and order" authoritarian leader can control their "criminality."
It is no accident that black people who were brutally exploited as slaves for over 200 years in America, became the convict labor of the chain gangs after the Civil War in the South, followed by "Jim Crow laws" that prevailed after the "Separate but Equal" decision of the Supreme Court in "Plessy vs Ferguson," and even today, one in three black males is imprisoned, and only one in seventeen whites are jailed for the same offenses.
For those who thought that we have a Constitution which provides a "separation of powers," and "checks and balances" on the executive branch, think again. The Republican controlled Congress is Donald Trump's rubber stamp, and has not, and will not hold him to account for ethical or legal violations.
Consider his ties to Putin, which have been further disclosed by the Michael Flynn scandal. We know there are further contacts that were made by Trump surrogates to Putin's operatives prior to the election, but the GOP Congress, which rushed to judgement on Hillary Clinton's non-role in the Benghazi incident, refuses to appoint a special committee to investigate the Trump/Putin connections!
Consider Donald Trump's refusal to release his tax returns or to divest himself of his businesses, and once again the Republican Congress cowardly looks the other way, and one of it's so called leaders, Paul Ryan, as much as says Trump's businesses are no concern of his!
And then there has been the incipient growth of the right wing media, led by Hate-Talk radio and demagogues like Rush Limbaugh for years, and then reinforced, if not surpassed, by the fascist duo of Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes in the creation of Fox "News."
In addition, we now have the former head of the racist trash called, "Breitbart" as Trump's chief "advisor,"and there are an endless amount of Trump trolls, who viciously attack his critics on social media, be it Facebook or Twitter.
And Corporate America has fallen in line with fascism as they see greater profits by cooperating with Trump, who hypocritically has appointed a Goldman-Sachs head, Steve Mnuchin, whose credentials for greed and depravity were well established in the economic collapse of 2008, as his new Secretary of the Treasury. Remember when Trump denounced Hillary for taking a fee from Goldman-Sachs for a speech, and yet now Trump is surrounded by G-S executives for "economic advice."
American democracy is in jeopardy as is the economic well being of all Americans and their civil and political liberties.
Marches and organizing to resist the Trump menace is all well and good, but if we can't remove the Republican enablers of this deranged would-be dictator, from Congress and the state government positions, we will not be able to stop the continued growth of fascism in America.
So for now, resist, march, voice your opinions on media of all sorts and send letters and calls to Congress to let them know how you feel, but in the end it's the vote that counts.
If you don't show up on election day in 2018, the tipping point for fascism in America could be reached, and thereafter Trump and the Republican Party will find ways to further disable the democratic process to insure their irreversible control of our government!
