The more liberal our government becomes the more our comparative test scores drop like a rock. The department of education is filled with liberal/socialist democrats. Most all of the teachers really care about is their union contract pay and perks. We have thrown billions of dollars into this department and all we get is a declining and uneducated people. In NYC they have to give English and math classes IN COLLEGE to most kids graduating from public schools because they can not read and write English and haven't a clue about math. The left has won BIG TIME and America has lost our history and culture.

Your letter should be sent to your Governor not your schools. They set the guidelines not the teachers. Having a daughter as a teacher working on her second masters degree and nationally certified I take offense that it your child's school fault. Jeb Bush's pet project Common Core so his Investor Owned Charter School flourish a innovated way to funnel your tax dollars . He doesn't have one Education Degree to back up this thinking. Even his Brother George made the list of one of the dumbest Presidents.

Education is a combined effort between schools and the parents. You just don't get to play with them. Stop drinking your kook aid and say something really Educational.

You are so unkind. I am not a Jeb Bush fan, but I know that Common Core was better run when it was kept local. I also know that when federal government started interfering in the schools that it was before Common Core. When Obama endorsed it and it became tied to federal funds it became a big government interference in education. Obama does not have a degree in education either. Also the Bush administration with the child left behind issue was a Ted Kennedy idea which Bush endorsed. Also individual schools can make a difference in a child's education if they have a elitism attitude. Also there is a lot politics in the educational system with liberal leaning thought.

Like the Texas legislator years ago who considered having a compulsory foreign language course - "I'm agin' it! If English was good enough for my Lord Jesus Christ, it's good enough for them kids!"

as I understand it, common core is a change that attempts two things. 1. Set some learning standards so schools everywhere have a guide...instead of, say, football or anti science curricula. 2. Lessons the devel global thinking skills as opposed to rote lessons. Sounds good to me.

The idea of Common Core is good. Well hell! I applaud of the philosophy of "No Child Left Behind"; but in practice it requires a lot of good teachers and money - so instead they wind up dumbing down everybody to the lowest common denominator and then cheating to make it look OK.

                          Thereby cheating everybody.

I was educated without Common Core. Standards have always been in schools. We educated a lot of people from different sectors of society. I agree about schools being tied to sports because the jocks were not always well educated, but I did not find this to be true in my days of public education. I found this when I was in college.

Comon Core is very political in nature. It is founded on great liberal thinking. It is a part of the big government complete. It wants critical thinking done on a political agenda. This is more like brainwashing.

I was taught to be an independent thinking. My grandchildren are taught independent thinking. My children were taught independent thinking. My two daughters were pushed out the public schools due to bullying and other unmentionable things. One of then home schooled and both GED graduates. My grandchildren are in private school, and nothing to do with Common Core. Common Core only dwells on the negative. It has always been known that all countries in this world have their dark side and their good sides. It is almost a sign of growing pains. I done this kind of critical thinking all my life. I have always reasoned that slavery was wrong as well as what happened to the Native Americans. It never washed under the bridge or hid. Common Core has a lot of a liberal political agenda. There are always two sides to a coin. Through the years, I wrote papers and did some critical thinking to draw conclusions. Drawing conclusions is apart of critical thinking. To say that it is not done is a fallacy. To say we only paint our history with rose colored glasses is a fallacy.

I too was taught to be an independent thinker and I taugtht my daughter the same thing . Now she home schools and all 4 of my grandkids are learning it too. I have always been a leader not a follower. I think that slavery was terribly wrong as well as what happened to the Indians, but it is part of our history. We must see it for what is was to ensure it never happens again. They leave out a lot about American history, which like it or not, it is a direct reflection on how many people think.

Unfortunately with our history there is never enough time in the day to learn everything about our country because we have grown so fast and changed so much. It is the independent mind that keeps searching for answers and prevention. As a country of different people we corrected many things. I do not think slavery will ever happen unless we pulled into tyranny. Also the Native Americans are turning themselves around in many ways. It is really up to them to make it in this country. I feel that many are taking advantage of what they can do for themselves.

Takes a lot for your comment.

Not actually. If you can read; you can read. If you know math, you know math. Only in Social Studies can it be fudged and there are large groups who want (and have) re-written history to minimize Jefferson or Slavery. Of course they have tried to change science to eliminate evolution (no longer a theory), geology, or climate science.

I think that evolution is still debatable about being a true fact. I do not think that it has truly been proven. It like so many things has been a political football. It also has been a religious football.

About Jefferson and slavery, I always known that he had slaves. He also had a problem with having slaves. Washington had slaves also and so did Jackson. This has always been apart of our history. There is nothing but war that brought it to an end. That is black slavery. Slavery of the Chinese was of a different variety in California. They were harshly on the railroads and the Unions did not like them so it. There was massacre back in the day.

No. I mean some States have had printed textbooks minimizes Jefferson's role in history, eliminates the fact that he was a Humanist, etc. On slavery there are 2 States that have the Union aggressing on the Confederacy and Slavery being primarily for the slaves own good.

"Evolution" should properly be called "Speciation through the process of natural selection." Darwinian "evolution" has been radically rewritten in the last 30 year - and yes, it has been observed in action.

That it has been a political and religious football is part of the point. It is Science, not political or religious belief. Does gravity, the globe of the earth, the universe need to be debated by theologians? You accept germs, atoms, electricity because you see the results. Why debate natural selection?

Thank you for your clarification. Where has evolution been observed in action? What has evolved as of late?

I am a believer in God, but I feel that he set things in motion but did leave it to nature and gave man free will. As far as science is concerned. It is part of his creation. I accept everything that has been put forth because of free will. I will not persecute any person for their beliefs. It is simply not place to make that kind of judgement.

Natural selection is not the debate. The stronger always survives at the cost of the weak. The difference is humanity that looks on the weakens offers a helping hand which is a Christian concept, This belief only becomes tarnished when they gain in power and become more self centered.

You are right in most of this. We hold very close to the same views. I was a Minister and Psychologist for years before going back and getting my degree in Systems Ecology. I have no scientific proof, but I believe that Man evolved for the brain and to make value judgements (like right and wrong). The difference is that I see the whole system, living and non-living. as a part of a gigantic computer program; with a multitude of feedback loops and If/Then decisions. On that level, is the system sentient? What is sentience? (without emotion; do the job the best.)

I believe it is, but that's me - there is evidence that it may be; but the judgement is as much faith as a person's belief in the virgin birth.
