This fiasco is not about normal law making by any stretch of the imagination.
It's theater, designed by the GOP majority, in a desperate attempt to 'prove' to its 'base' how tough it is. The result is nothing short of nonsense, wasted time, and wasted money.
It's always some picky little base-pandering, fine print, spec of manufactured 'moral' or 'values' dust that grinds the entire government to a halt or near halt. And it's ridiculous. It's amateur night. It's the high school lunchroom. Well, maybe that one was too harsh. High schoolers don't waste time on this kind of drama. They got texts to send....
I'm well aware of how laws are made - in general. But I gotta tell ya, I never read anything in the Constitution about threatening, year in and year out, by some fanatical fringe element, to gring the entire government to a halt, risk national security, and add billions of dollars to the debt to accommodate a couple of Congressional members' bids for the Presidency. It's a good bet the Founding Fathers also assumed that, for the most part, those elected to Congress would use their heads, keep the welfare of the country - and ALL of its citizens - in mind, and have backbone enough to make intelligent decisions for the short and long term.
That is not what this is.
What all this DOES do, though, is make a very strong case for having a Democrat in the White House to head off the chicanery and shenanigans of the current bunch of radicals in Congress.
So I and others will certainly be happy to give them what they're apparently begging for.
