How Stupid Are The American People?

If the 2016 election proved nothing else, it proved that the American electorate with the help of the antiquated Electoral College system, could elect a "ham sandwich" as president, provided the "ham" could lie as egregiously and as often as Donald Trump did.

The book shown above by Rick Shenkman should be a citizen's primer for all Americans, although we know it won't be, because too many Americans are too lazy or too disinterested to read. But it tells just how stupid American voters are and what they could do to change their situation. The question isn't whether the premise of the book is true or not, it's whether sufficient numbers of Americans are responsible enough to realize what the book says!

Let's face it, 50% of the American people are really stupid or if not congenitally stupid, they are woefully uninformed, and have little or no interest in correcting their ignorance!

Half of the American people know all the main characters in the TV show, "The Simpsons," but only 2 out of 5 know there are three branches to their government!

Most American men spend far more time watching or following sporting events, as well as spending their money supporting "their teams," be they in baseball, football or basketball than they do informing themselves about what is happening in politics.

Rabid sports "fans" could tell you who all the star players are in the sports they follow, but they couldn't tell you who the Secretary of State of the USA is.

And when you have such an ignorant group of people, they are ripe for conspiracies, insidious lies and other calculated frauds that are perpetrated by those who have a very selfish and profiteering agenda - like many of the big industries or corporations in America.

Fox News is a TV brothel posing as "broadcast news" for lying media prostitutes like O'Reilly, Hannity, and their morning "friends" show. On radio there is a never ending stream of demagogues, who rant and rave with one obscene absurdity after another such as Limbaugh, Alex Jones, Savage, Levin, et. al.

And millions of Americans tune into this putrid propaganda and swallow it whole, because they don't know anything, and are therefore easily duped, fear-mongered and exploited!

The fact that an obvious and proven charlatan like Donald Trump could slither into the WH in any election points to the fact that the rationality and knowledge levels of the American people are dangerously low.

Democracy doesn't thrive all on it's own. It requires an informed citizenry, and while the American media leaves a lot to be desired for content and honesty, there are sufficient outlets of responsible TV networks, radio programs, newspapers, magazines, and websites so that any adult American could keep themselves knowledgeable enough to stop electing people to political office (aka: Republicans), who are doing them harm!

Yes, we have to abolish the Electoral College, and yes, we have to end gerrymandering in the states, and yes, we have to stop the GOP's criminal attempts to disenfranchise American voters with their phony "ID" requirements, but most of all, Americans have a duty to themselves, their families and their country to stay informed!

And that means relying on more than one TV station or newspaper, and checking out stories that seem outrageous or unlikely.

If we don't, the Trump/Republican travesty, which has put us all in dire straits, will get worse, and soon there will be no difference between life in the USA, and life in Russia, run by the despot, Putin, and his political pals!

the most violent element in society is ignorance”

when the oppressed collude in their oppression by accepting it as the way things are, it becomes very difficult to make changes in the status quo.

how can this be changed? how to get a meaningful education out to the citizens when the very educational system in the u.s. is under attack>

That is one of the most profound questions I've seen asked on Yabberz. Things have changed so much from the time I went to school over 34+ years ago that the mountain of much needed change seems too high to climb.

How do we get meaningful education to developing minds using the technologies they use to communicate or research information?

I haven't a clue - seriously, but if you have any ideas, I'd sure appreciate it if you shared. I'm about to be a grandfather and I don't have much hope for that generation.

Only by massive and popular participation by the American people to be more vigilant in the guarding of their liberties and the education of their children, and voting out the GOP, which has proven to be disastrous if not selling out the American people.

Nearly half of all people have below average intelligence. That is, they have less than a 100 IQ. Yet most of those people say in surveys that they have above average intelligence.

                          American intelligence?? Case closed.

Great post Org. I'd like to add this one small thought. Now that we have internet of things and most of us have a PC, smartphone or tablet, there's absolutely no excuse for not "knowing" the government.

Things have really changed now with information just at our fingertips. I can remember a time pre-computer when I'd have to rely on newspaper, radio, TV and Time magazine for information regarding candidates, elections and basically anything to do with government.

Now, it's all right here. There's no excuse for not being informed.
