      Immigration Questions

I have some serious questions regarding the lying bully’s plan to send asylum seekers to sanctuary cities.

Will these people be processed at the border? If so, then will they be granted asylum? If not, then what will their immigration status be?

If they are not processed at the border, and they are put on buses to sanctuary cities, does that mean that ICE will be transporting “illegal immigrants” around the U.S.?

If the asylum seekers have no status, does that mean that ICE will spend more of taxpayers’ money seeking to deport them from the sanctuary cities?

Will ICE be keeping track of these asylum seekers, so that some sort of resolution can occur regarding their immigration status? Or, will they just be left in legal limbo to be treated as pawns in the ongoing immigration battle?

Once again, I think the lying bully has come up with some more “red meat” for his base, but with absolutely no thought to a plan, much less the consequences of the actions he wants to take place.

      Any answers?

I live in a sanctuary city and my city would be happy to welcome asylum-seekers, as we and other such cities already do.

We already have people who seek asylum--our country has had them for decades--and we already have laws governing how they are treated. We have no need to make up new procedures.

They are not "illegal immigrants" because there is nothing at all illegal about requesting asylum. The only "crisis" has been manufactured by the ignorant buffoon in the White House who never bothered to learn history or our laws, and who is trying to convince folks that we have to make this stuff up from scratch.

Will they be kept in limbo? That depends on whether Trump succeeds in further manufacturing a "crisis". The way to avoid this is

          1. quit separating families, so that kids are kidnapped by Border Control and lost forever in the bureaucracy
          2. adequately fund immigration courts, so that the cases of those applying for asylum can be handled quickly.

This is not rocket science. Other countries adjudicate asylum-seekers every day. So did we, before Fox News took over our government.

For what it is worth, they already take them to large cities and drop them off. In Phoenix, many of them are left at the Greyhound station. Phoenix, was one of those, "sanctuary cities," unofficially.

There are much worse places. We have a huge Hispanic Community, they are well supported. I do not believe the impact is that big of a deal.

This is a bit off topic, but along the same lines.

Some states also do the same with recently released prisoners. They dump'em on others. Ones' who have no home to go to when their time to serve is up, they'll take them to the nearest big city, give them $50.oo to start life over, drop them off on a corner and say "you be good now you hear?" I remember a story back in the day where the City of Atlanta filed a complaint with the state over the practice saying it contributed to homeless problem that the state wasn't giving them any money to help deal with.

In a word, YES. There are actually reports of ICE doing this last year as well. In fact, this COULD BE a solution to the "humanitarian crisis". The federal government is not equipped to handle the influx of immigrants coming to the USA seeking asylum. Rather than Trump's racist rhetoric, placing these people in so-called sanctuary cities and covering the cost of housing them, and even processing them through the asylum system in those cities could actually help to alleviate the strain at ports of entry.

Officials in New Mexico asked for donations Friday after Border Patrol agents dropped off asylum-seeking migrants in their city.

Las Cruces city officials appealed for "personal hygiene products including sanitary napkins; shampoo; conditioner; lotion; Chapstick or similar types of lip balm; clothing; towels; blankets; and canned food and bottled water" in a statement on their website.

I think you will find they have been given a preliminary finding that they ‘might be eligible’ for asylum....but a final decision will be made a couple of years from now. I think I read there is about a million person backlog on these final court hearing.

I assume there is a requirement to advise the government from time to time where you can be found, but I do not think there is a restriction on where you can go. You would likely have some kind of document you could show the ICE if they stopped you before your trial date come up.

What I do not know is are you eligible for various welfare benefits that outright refugees would be eligible for. There is a balance that is needed to keep people from starving vs. making it attractive to come here and lie about you need for asylum.

Your post sounds so "reasonable". The first paragraph is exactly what happens now, isn't it? But, isn't that supposed to be the problem? That too many immigrants are coming in? (Especially given that there is a backlog of almost a million people.) Doesn't the lying bully want to close the borders? Now, it's okay to let people in, and on top of that, spend taxpayer money to transport them all over the US? How is this solving the problem?

I never asked about restrictions on where people could go; I only asked if ICE would try to deport them. Yes, I'm so sure that ICE would NEVER harass people who "had some kind of document". /s/

There is no "balance that is needed to keep people from starving vs. making it attractive to come here and lie about you (sic) need for asylum." According to www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/your-rights-after-..., "Note that you are not yet eligible for asylee benefits if your asylum case is on appeal or if you only received conditional or recommended approval."

So those people who have to wait for a "couple of years" receive no federal benefits. They cannot work legally, nor can they obtain a drivers' because most states require a Social Security number to apply for a drivers' license, and they cannot apply for a Social Security number until they have been granted asylum.

I can't let your statement that people will "lie" about their need for asylum, go by without mentioning it. I don't know why you think that asylum seekers are lying, but it certainly says more about you than it does about them, considering you made it without any proof.

You did not answer my questions by stating what is actually happening now, (so, how is spending taxpayer money to transport immigrants all over the US a solution?) assumptions (your second paragraph), and untrue statements (also in the second paragraph about "lying" to obtain asylum).
