Driving home from the hardware store on an errand, I crossed our local concrete bridge over the flood control channel, something I'd done thousands of times. It has had a lot of work done over the years to repair the road surface which is breaking down and full of pot holes. There's a 4 foot barrier between the opposing lanes and the lanes are narrow so you are driving in a cement lined alleyway it seems. As I began to cross doing about 40 mph, I saw something come flying over the barrier from the opposing lanes and it was big. A chunk of roadway about the size of a ball cap with a piece of rebar sticking out. No time to do anything but duck. BANG and I was sprayed with glass shards. Lucky I had the visor down since it was late and the sun was low, otherwise I'd have been possibly blinded by eyes full of glass. My shirt and lap were full of them. The hole at the top is where the rebar penetrated. It went on to put a big dent in the roof of my van on the bounce. I don't know about the cars behind me. You can't stop or pull over on the bridge so I just kept driving while saying Holy Shyte to myself. A very scary moment out of the blue.
Bullet dodged. Stay safe folks. I'll put a claim in with the city and see where it goes. The bridge is falling apart.
