Hathloul should get the Nobel Peace Prize; Sotoudeh and Hathloul should get some negotiations from our people, but we no longer have an ambassador to Saudi Arabia nor to Iran.
The horrors these women (and their families) have withstood in order to standup to the oppressive regimes they are subjected to are warnings to all who would follow dictators.
However, it seems not to matter that our country denounces one of these countries and ignores the others since the treatment afforded each woman is equally horrid. I hope it matters, but will it?
(“This sentence is beyond barbaric,” the U.S. State Department said of Sotoudeh’s reported sentence. Quite true. But the State Department refuses to be equally blunt in denouncing Hathloul’s torture and imprisonment; that’s because it sees the Saudis as allies and the Iranians as enemies.”)
