I fear America has been fascist for a very long time, we were just better at hiding it behind our patriotism/nationalism and civic religion. You look throughout our history, both recent and past, and we are, in many ways, an extremely oppressive, racist, imperialistic, colonialist, warmongering society. The two original sins of our history, slavery and genocide, continue to haunt us because we have never, collectively, actually dealt with them on honest terms.
Slavery gave way to Jim Crow and segregation, just the folksy Americana version of apartheid, which gave way to the war on drugs and tough on crime agenda, which had the effect of incarcerating millions upon millions of people, disproportionately people of color, as well as the poor, and those with mental illnesses; more people in real terms and per capita than any other nation on earth. We are a carceral police state. Instead of calling it "slavery", we call it "prison labor", and private companies demand that the state locks more people up so that they can make more money off their confinement, even threatening to shut down if the state (MY state, NM) doesn't do its bidding. This is SLAVERY.
The company that has operated a private prison in Estancia for nearly three decades has announced it will close the Torrance County Detention Facility and lay off more than 200 employees unless it can find 300 state or federal inmates to fill empty beds within the next 60 days, according to a statement issued Tuesday by county officials.
It's actually slavery, the thirteenth amendment has that huge loophole you could sail a slave ship through.
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Fascism, oppression, repression, a tendency towards authoritarianism and violence, is baked into our national DNA.
trump just blatantly took the mask off of most of it, most politicians are better at using the slippery language and platitudes that hide what we really are.
Make no mistakes, the problem isn't trump, or the Republican party alone, the problem is the collective US.
"Detention" camps have been ordered...
c. 5. Detention Facilities. (a) The Secretary shall take all appropriate action and allocate all legally available resources to immediately construct, operate, control, or establish contracts to construct, operate, or control facilities to detain aliens at or near the land border with Mexico.
(b) The Secretary shall take all appropriate action and allocate all legally available resources to immediately assign asylum officers to immigration detention facilities for the purpose of accepting asylum referrals and conducting credible fear determinations pursuant to section 235(b)(1) of the INA (8 U.S.C. 1225(b)(1)) and applicable regulations and reasonable fear determinations pursuant to applicable regulations.
(c) The Attorney General shall take all appropriate action and allocate all legally available resources to immediately assign immigration judges to immigration detention facilities operated or controlled by the Secretary, or operated or controlled pursuant to contract by the Secretary, for the purpose of conducting proceedings authorized under title 8, chapter 12, subchapter II, United States Code.
Sec. 6. Detention for Illegal Entry. The Secretary shall immediately take all appropriate actions to ensure the detention of aliens apprehended for violations of immigration law pending the outcome of their removal proceedings or their removal from the country to the extent permitted by law. The Secretary shall issue new policy guidance to all Department of Homeland Security personnel regarding the appropriate and consistent use of lawful detention authority under the INA, including the termination of the practice commonly known as "catch and release," whereby aliens are routinely released in the United States shortly after their apprehension for violations of immigration law.
Not that we didn't already have all of these, they're just being taken up a gear now.
We can either face the harsh truth about our nation, and seriously reckon with it, or we can continue to live in denial. I know what I'm going to do, do you?
This isn't just about trump, this is about the entirety of our history, recent and not so recent.https://t.co/1SY8NgBGrq
