Can a man with (for "ordinary" Americans) an unpronounceable name and who is (for old farts like me) unbearably young have influence in the 2020 Presidential election or even have a shot himself? Answers from David Leonhardt--

The Millennials are being screwed. But not by the boomers who protested against the Viet Nam War and in favor of civil rights and equal rights for women. The biggest enemies of the Millennials have been the Koch Brothers, who plotted the slashing of funding for public education, junior colleges and public universities, as well as the legal attacks on labor unions. This cartoon posted yesterday by Mr. Caslon pretty much sums it up.

Few people understand that the oldest millennials are now turning 40 and the youngest are 25. It is now a larger generation than boomers, who are starting to die off.

Some use slighter different beginning and ending dates, but most people consider everyone under 30 to be a millennial. Not the case.

From the article: "Young Americans favor aggressive action, now, to slow climate change. But the Republican Party — which wins elections with strong support from older voters — has vetoed any such action. As a result, greenhouse gases keep spewing into the atmosphere, and the climate crisis is likely to be far worse than it needs to be. Today’s young Americans will be left to suffer the consequences and bear the costs.“

It's not so much as pronouncing his name as it is knowing just who the heck he is. The article describes him as a rising star within the Democrat Party but do people, outside of South Bend, Indiana, even know who he is and what he has accomplished? I think Democrat voters are more about the issues and not so much into a popularity contest. So, if Mr. Buttigieg is serious about making a run in 2020 he might just wish to get some name recognition and have more concrete solutions to our problems and also let the voter know where he stands on all the issues. (I want this for all Democrat candidates) .

I have always predicted that future generations will despise us for bankrupting their future, and it's already started. Imagine, the bulk of the trash we produce daily and the resources wasted in making that trash is all for convenience.....not necessity.

We know that we can replace petroleum based plastics with industrial hemp, yucca and other organics. So why aren't there large hemp plantations? The real question is what and who are the roadblocks to green technology and energy? That question is more rhetorical than inquisitive. See the petroleum oligarchy for that answer.

I have posted articles and responses pointing out that over population is the root cause of both economic and environmental degradation. Yet, not only does no one want to talk about that, but society celebrates people like Octo-Mom.

No religion has any solution, they are focused on death, sexual regulation and the afterlife. The sexual regulation and campaigns against family planning are the root causes of overpopulation, famine, disease and war. Is it any wonder that the Catholics and Evangelicals are obsessed with closing Planned Parenthood.

I am a financial idiot, so I'll leave the economic issues to those who know what they're talking about.

I side with the Millennials. I remember the venom my generation received from the Depression Generation for opposing Vietnam the war, rock & roll and how we dressed. I have always made sure I didn't repeat that stupidity.

I am most disappointed with those of my generation who forgot the principles of simple humanism and morphed into white supremacist Trumpiots. I separate myself from the self righteous, bible thumping, flag waving self proclaimed super patriots.

It is not treason to speak out against what you see as wrong with your country, it's your duty. Those who want to repress freedom of speech and the media aren't the super patriots they claim to be, they're the traitors they accuse the rest of us being.

This is an example of the images of older generations that have alienated younger generations for time immemorial:

I think many of the older generation of today forget that they were once the younger generation who rebelled against the establishment and got things done.
