Ryan sees the writing on the "wall"? (pun intended).

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan will not run for re-election, his office announced Wednesday, injecting another layer of uncertainty as Republicans face worries over losing their majority in the fall.

Ryan's plans have been the source of much speculation and will set off a scramble among his lieutenants to take the helm. A self-styled budget guru, Ryan had made tax cuts a centerpiece of his legislative agenda, and a personal cause, and Congress delivered on that late last year.

Ryan, 48, announced his plans at a closed-door meeting of House Republicans Wednesday morning, according to those present. His tone was somber, and he read directly from prepared remarks.

"After nearly 20 years in the House, the speaker is proud of all that has been accomplished and is ready to devote more of his time to being a husband and a father," Ryan adviser Brendan Buck said in a statement. "While he did not seek the position, he told his colleagues that serving as speaker has been the professional honor of his life, and he thanked them for the trust they placed in him."

Ryan will serve out his term and retire in January, Buck said.

He will find a position in a private sector, actually pretty sure already discussed and opened just for him. There will be no headache of re-election and accomadation to ever changing agenda. His agenda never changed it’s a self serving one.

Ryan wants people to believe he is stepping down because he wants more time with his family. Really? He is only in D.C. 1/3rd of the year when Congress is in session and the remaining 2/3rds of the year is home with his family. He doesn't do town hall meetings anymore so just what is it that keeps him so busy he has no time for his family? That is just a crock of you know what and the real reason is he sees that the House under his bogus leadership while his Party has the majority has failed and this Party may even lose the House come the election thanks to his so-called leadership. This is a cowards way of running as fast as he can before the proverbial sh*t hits the fan. Good riddance to a spineless wimp who was the first to cave in and kiss Trump's big fat butt when he took office.

Some comments from readers of theWashington Post:

*”Let’s see. His accomplishments include cutting taxes, raising spending, ruining healthcare, setting the table for cutting medicare and social security and accelerating the income inequality gap (just to name a few). His work on behalf of our country and it’s citizens is done now that we are all screwed. Atta boy Paul, way to go.”

*”Instead of redeeming himself by standing up to the evil person who occupies the oval office, he walks away. His name will go down in history as a coward and a traitor.”

*”He sticks us with the largest deficit in history, and supports the least legitimate President in history, and then walks away and leaves us with the mess. Gee, thank you for your service.”

*”Ryan has failed at both his pretended goals and his real goals. He pretended to be a champion of fiscal responsibility, convincing naive centrists that he really meant it; but his legacy is one of bigger deficits. His real goal was to eviscerate the social safety net, under the pretense of doing it in the name of fiscal responsibility. In particular, his signature proposal was to voucherize, privatize, and defund Medicare. But that’s not happening And meanwhile, as Speaker, his main achievement, if you can call it that, has been as enabler of corruption and contempt for rule of law. It’s unclear whether the end game will be Democratic takeover of the House or autocracy, American style. But either way, what a legacy.”

I have never seen such a docile Speaker of the House. He is not as obvious as Devin Nunes, but he is just as effective in protecting Trump. Just in a different way.
