I am watching the clashes continue right now. There are people on the street walking around with guns at the University of Virginia, because they don't want a statue of Robert E. Lee taken down. They have attacked the police. They have attacked ministers. They are out of control. Yet, our President says nothing.

Just in case anyone has any questions about why the confederate states seceded, here are actual historical documents and quotes that should answer them:

          From the Confederate Constitution:

          • Article I, Section 9, Paragraph 4: "No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed."
          • Article IV, Section 3, Paragraph 3: "The Confederate States may acquire new territory . . . In all such territory, the institution of negro slavery, as it now exists in the Confederate States, shall be recognized and protected by Congress and the territorial government."
        • From the Georgia Constitution of 1861:"The General Assembly shall have no power to pass laws for the emancipation of slaves." (This is the entire text of Article 2, Sec. VII, Paragraph 3.)
        • From the Alabama Constitution of 1861: "No slave in this State shall be emancipated by any act done to take effect in this State, or any other country." (This is the entire text of Article IV, Section 1 (on slavery).)
        • Alexander Stephens, Vice-President of the Confederacy, referring to the Confederate government: "Its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery . . . is his natural and normal condition." [Augusta, Georgia, Daily Constitutionalist, March 30, 1861.]
        • On the formation of black regiments in the Confederate army, by promising the troops their freedom:
          • Howell Cobb, former general in Lee's army, and prominent pre-war Georgia politician: "If slaves will make good soldiers, then our whole theory of slavery is wrong." [Battle Cry of Freedom, p. 835.]
          • A North Carolina newspaper editorial: "it is abolition doctrine . . . the very doctrine which the war was commenced to put down." [North Carolina Standard, Jan. 17, 1865; cited in Battle Cry of Freedom, p. 835.]
          • Robert M.T. Hunter, Senator from Virginia, "What did we go to war for, if not to protect our property?"

With so much cruelity in the world, we should lower our heads in shame for an American President who loves himself and shows no empathy, compassion, and respect for others.

Shame does not begin to cover it. Today he retweeted a disgusting cartoon of a car mowing over a CNN journalist, like that is suppose to be funny. For goodness sakes, he is the President!

I am heartsick. Forget "neo-nazi" Trump is a Nazi and would just as soon have these hate filled racists goose stepping up to the White House to hale him as their leader. He would love a parade of his adoring simpletons to hail him as their Fuhrer. He is someone I am entirely ashamed to have representing my America. I am disheartened and grieved everyday he is still in office.

Forget Trump. Leave the statues alone. We have Islam, North Korea and an opioid epidemic

and are tearing ourselves apart over a war that cost us 500,000 Americans. What savages you have become.

It seems to me sad that people cannot accept that Robert E Lee was part of American history. He may well have been the best General of the Civil War, but like Napoleon, made one big mistake. And he was not on the right side.

As for the protests, if America doesn't want people carrying guns to protests, what about some gun law? Not banning, but at least requiring some reasonable restrictions.

It is our History and north and south and to the to me that statue or any symbol of that war is a symbol of victory as well as defeat .

A symbol of the valor and determination of both sides .

The cause for most fighting for the south was one of states right's not slavery .

Only a small percentage of southerners used slave labor .

How many people were shot at this demonstration ?

You make a good point. Gen. Lee was first offered the command of all Union forces but declined because he said he could never attack his home state of Virginia. The Civil War occurred less than 100 years from the time the union had been formed, there was still a view that your state was more like your country that represented your core values and that the USA was more of a central coordinating administrative function. Today I think it would be fair to say in most circumstances that people today feel they are Americans first and a New Yorker second. Back in those days the feelings were the complete obsite.

The state of Virginia has what is called an 'open carry law' which to the best of my knowledge requires nothing, no background check, no training, etc. Now if you hide your gun in your pocket or under your shirt you must have a special permit and background check.

It does not strike me as odd that carrying guns during that kind parade or protest seems to be pushing common sense. However in all fairness I am unaware of anyone who got shot....and there were a lot of guns there.

Who said he was not part of American history? I don't think he needs to be glorified in this manner. He is not my hero. Some one on this site earlier today told me millions of Americans worship him. I doubt that. I know who he is and I don't worship him. As far as I am concerned, he was a traitor to his country. However, if people want to see a statue of him, put it in a Civil War museum.

My response to him was most Americans probably don't even know who he was. Now, ask them who the Kardashians are, and they will know.

Virginia is an open carry state, so people can carry weapons anywhere they want. Heck, they can carry them into a bar. Great idea-getting drunk and having guns around.
