“Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the chairman of the committee that asked the researchers to analyze the tech companies’ data, said the findings show “how aggressively Russia sought to divide Americans by race, religion and ideology.”
When I finished reading this article, I kept coming back to this part of Burr’s comment. I have confidence most here on the forum understand the impact of these three words, “race, religion, and ideology.”
It is a masterstroke on Putin’s part with his understanding of how to manipulate the populace of the United States and directly influence the outcome of our last Presidential election. Masterful on Putin’s part, in the manner, it went virtually undetected along with it Trump’s lickspittles in both the House and Senate either discounting or ignoring it altogether.
Putin skillfully used the most common elements of the prejudicial trinity so subtly most missed it, and those who did pick up on it found themselves in heated debates or accused of just being Trump haters. A position Putin would relish with the utmost glee and enjoyment. When you take a moment to contemplate how we got here, it is not that hard to figure out.
The most obvious is we never took Trump seriously when he announced his entry into the presidential sweepstakes. Along, with accepting the majority opinion, he had a snowball's chance in Hell of winning. When he came down the escalator amid paid performers and made his speech, we were all but sure his campaign was over before it got out of the gate. But, Trump had a triad of his own. His hatred for Obama, his greed, and his delusions of grandeur all of which played right into Putin’s waiting arms. After witnessing Trump’s announcement, it was just a matter of time when he would say, “Welcome comrade Trump.”
The thumping Trump got by President Obama at the Correspondents Dinner may or may not been the catalyst for Trump’s entry into the Presidential sweepstakes, but his hatred for Obama indeed was. He along with multitudes of others, couldn’t handle the US have a non-white male as president.
Putin the master spy and ultimate operative knew this about Trump and understood the politics of race as it played out in the United States, knew from jump street he could manipulate Trump. Then there were Trump’s greed and delusions of grandeur, so easy for Putin to work and he did.
Beyond Trump, Putin also realized something else. He recognized the unwillingness on our part to read and check things out, and our willingness to accept what showed up on social media as fact: the ideal confluence of what many would consider a strange set of events, but none the less something he could work with and that he did.
What could be better? You have an individual who is greedy, hates anyone who doesn’t look like him, and believes he “alone” can fix things in the US. Combined that with a particular segment of the US populace who will respond predictably to issues on race, religion, and ideology and you have the perfect formula for influencing an American election.
When Trump's base is presented with this information, it gets ignored or they default to their safe place and say it’s “fake news.”
They are more than willing to abdicate any responsibility for doing the necessary reading and research to verify facts. My polite way of saying far too many people are too damn lazy to check things out.
And what is scary about this, is Putin knows it and counts on it. Which is why James Comey admonishment about calling out the GOP and the American people stand up to Trump is essential.
“At some point, someone has to stand up and face the fear of Fox News, fear of their base, fear of mean tweets, stand up for the values of this country and not slink away into retirement but stand up and speak the truth,”
Those who are in the Senate and Congress need to understand their election is not for a lifetime, and they are there to do the will on the people not that of Mitch McConnell of Paul Ryan, but the people.
So as Comey said they need to move past Fox News fire-breathers like Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and radio talkers like Rush Limbaugh, and Michael Savage who prepped the soil with their version of race, religion, and ideology.
All Putin had to do was plant the seeds and sit back and harvest the fruit of his labors.
